Sermon Topic –  Remembrance Sunday

Saving Private Ryan is a remarkable film that was nominated for eleven oscars, and won five. Its depiction of the D-Day landings are unprecedented, but most moving of all are the interviews with the veterans of that day. And beyond the stories of great heroism and bravery a question emerges, which becomes the overarching theme of the movie; How do you live in the light of so great a sacrifice?

“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends”
In John 15 Jesus is preparing his disciples for life after his death. And he begins to answer that question. What does God want for my life? What does a life lived well look like? And the answer isn’t about wealth or success or status, but about love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, faithfulness and so on, and that is found by rooting our lives deeply in Christ. We live in the light of the greatest sacrifice of all, and our lives must reflect that.
