The Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem marks the place (or our best guess) where heaven and earth met at Christmas. It has been a site of pilgrimage for Emperors, kings and queens, movie stars and millions of ordinary people every year. It is an amazing place, but perhaps the most surprising thing about this church is the door. It is tiny. No more than 4 feet high.

And so it means that no matter who you are, you are going to have to bow down to get in. And that is a wonderful metaphor for God’s kingdom. It is free for anyone to enter, but everyone has to bow down. And the story in John 3 of Nicodemus, who was very great in the eyes of the world, and perhaps in his own eyes, but that meant it was very difficult for him to enter. And the passage leaves us with the question – what was Nicodemus response to Jesus, and what is our response too?
