Our Chaplain, Rev Mark Fletcher, preached on Galatians 5:13-23.

Last Sunday’s sermon explored the theme of freedom in Christianity from Galatians 5. Early Christianity was transformative, breaking social barriers and fostering equality. However, the church faced two pitfalls. The first being amoralism, where moral standards are disregarded, and the second moralism, which can lead to judgmental attitudes and rigid rule-following. Both extremes detract from the authentic freedom found in Christ.

The heart of the passage emphasized that true Christian freedom is found in walking alongside God, rather than in strict adherence to rules or pursuit of personal whims. The fruits of living in the Spirit—like love, joy, peace, and self-control—signify God’s active presence in our lives. We are encouraged to nurture our relationship with God daily, to embrace the liberating freedom offered by Christ and to lovingly serve others, thus truly embodying the spirit of Christian freedom.
